Magnetic levitation

In 1992-1994  Neva-Magnit together with the St. Petersburg State University of Aircraft Istrumentation  took part in the development and manufacturing of a non-contact electromagnetic suspension for models of aircraft in wind tunnels. Later developments in this area were implemented in a device for measuring low gas consumption and in toys LeviFit and LeveFit II.

LveFit Toy

A hollow steel sphere 60 mm in diameter is suspended at a point of unstable equilibrium between two permanent magnets. The displacement of the sphere relative to the equilibrium point is prevented by electromagnetic forces produced by the correction coils at the poles, which amplify / weaken the fields of the permanent magnets by the feedback signal from the sphere position gage.

The device can be slowly rotated in space and the sphere itself will find a new stable position that will correspond to a minimum power consumption. You can slightly click on the sphere and thereby cause its damped oscilations. It can be used  a special starting spacer to start levitation of the sphere. The simplest NiCd battery (4.8V 0.25 Ah) provides levitation of the sphere for more than 50 hours.

LeveFit II

This is a new type of device using effect of magnetic levitation. It do not have a separate position gage, which is usually required to provide a feedback signal. The coil here simultaneously performs the functions of an electromagnet and a position gage. The electronic circuit of the device "cancels out" the ohmic resistance of the coil and provides so-called "frozen flow regime" of it. It means that the coil maintains its original entrapped magnetic flux of the permanent magnet and thereby ensures its levitation. In practice, it behaves like a short-circuited superconducting coil.
